Subject Leader – Ms Bacon

Introduction 

Art has always been a passion of mine and was always my favourite subject when I was at school! I love how Art gives children the opportunity to encourage self-expression and creativity, builds confidence and also gives children a sense of individual identity.

The children here at St. Wilfrid’s also enjoy art as much as I do. Here’s what they had to say…

Vision for the subject 

During their time at St. Wilfrid’s we want our children to develop a deeper love, understanding and appreciation of Art. We want all children to achieve the National Curriculum outcomes for Art as a subject and be confident when applying the techniques that they have learnt to any future artwork they do.   

Art Intent

At St Wilfrid’s we have a structure and sequence of lessons to help teachers ensure they have covered the skills required to meet the aims of the national curriculum. The intent is to ensure all pupils produce creative, imaginative work. Children have the opportunity to explore their ideas and record their experiences, as well as exploring the work of others and evaluate different creative ideas. Children will become confident and proficient in a variety of techniques including drawing, painting, sculpting, as well as other selected craft skills such as collage, printing, weaving and patterns. Children will also develop their knowledge of famous artists, designers and craft makers. Children will also develop their interest and curiosity about art and design through a series of lessons offering skills progression, knowledge progression and offering children the opportunity to ask questions and demonstrate their skills in a variety of ways. The lessons will offer the chance for children to develop their emotional expression through art to further enhance their personal, social and emotional development.

Implementing Art

Each unit comes with a Unit Marker, detailing what the children should know, will learn during the unit, and the next steps. As well as this, additional resources to give the teacher and adults leading art confidence in progression of skills and knowledge and that outcomes have been met. Each key stage focuses on different themes to ensure continued interest in the subject as well as acquiring new knowledge. The lessons we have suggested develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. We have suggested a specific series of lessons for each year group, which will offer structure and narrative. They are by no means to be used exclusively, but are used to support planning.

Art Impact

Art and design learning is loved by teachers and pupils across school. Teachers have high expectations of all children and we enjoy the fact that quality evidence can be presented in a variety of ways. All children use technical vocabulary accurately and pupils are expected to know, apply and understand the matters, skills and processes specified. Children improve their enquiry skills and inquisitiveness about the world around them, and their impact through art and design on the world. Children will become more confident in analysing their work and giving their opinion on their own and other works of art. Children show competences in improving their resilience and perseverance by continually evaluating and improving their work. All children in school can speak confidently about their art and design work and their skills.

Introduction 

Design and Technology is an extremely important subject for developing a wide variety of skills that children will need for future employment. I am very passionate with the vision of Design and Technology and the skills that it promotes to the children like creativity, judgment, decision making, leadership skills, resilience and adversity.

Vision for the subject: 

During their time at St Wilfrid's Catholic Academy, we would like children to have built up a resilience to adversity in creating, designing and evaluating. We want to give all children the opportunity to improve their innovation and forward thinking to help them to become suitable candidates for future employers. We would like all children to have accessed a range of creative yet challenging projects which will have transferable skills across the years and across all areas of the curriculum.

Intent 

At St Wilfrid’s, we believe that Design & Technology is an essential part of the curriculum; a subject that not only stands alone, but also integrates with all parts of all learning. 

Through teaching D&T, the school aims to equip our children to use logical and critical thinking and creativity to understand and change the world. We believe that children should be able to articulate themselves in a 3D space and be provided with the tools to realise their ideas. We strive to create a thirst for learning about what is out there and to challenge established ideas in order to create new products.  

We aim to deliver design and technology lessons that inspire children, and will help to develop a range of skills that they will be able to use throughout their lives. Our children will be taught skills in a way that will allow them to participate effectively and safely in the modern world, not only during their primary education, but also beyond. 

Impact

By the end of their time at St Wilfrid’s, children will be have been given the opportunity to develop the physical skills that will enable them to start to create and realise their ideas. Children will have developed their motor skills throughout their time at St Wilfrid’s and develop the dexterity necessary for life’s skills. Children will also develop their analytical minds and be able to question what decisions go into creating something new and then express themselves using their own inventiveness.   

Children will be creating projects for users which will help to promote future love and career aspirations in the field of Design and Technology. We aim to build creativeness, invention and teamwork which are vital skills for all careers.

The impact of this is to ensure that children acquire and develop the necessary knowledge and skills to provide a starting point that will prepare them for Year 7 and have the foundations for the rest of their lives.
