English

Subject Leader – Mrs Forrester

I have always loved books and the conventions of the English language. My Dad has always been my role model for reading and I hope to be a role model for English for the children of our school.

I have been teaching for over 20 years and it became very apparent at the start of my career that I had a real passion for the teaching of English. I find it wonderful to see children engrossed in a book they are reading, or enthusiastically joining in with stories and rhymes and even not wanting a class novel to end because they are enjoying the story so much. During school productions, to see children shine and ooze confidence when performing in front of their family and school friends is just magical. To spot future authors when reading children’s creative writing where they use language and imagery to really engage the reader is inspiring. Seeing children being able to articulate their thoughts clearly in their writing and speech, using the conventions of standard English, often showing maturity beyond their years is wonderful. All of this is, to me, is what makes the teaching and leading of English in school so special and rewarding.

As stated in the National Curriculum, in order to achieve in life and be the best they possibly can be, our children need to be able to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them. I want our children to be able to participate fully as a member of society, being able to express their views and opinions and understand the wonderful world which God created. The skills of language are essential for this.

To support children and staff in delivering a curriculum in which children can develop a love of reading, confidence and articulation in their speech and writing and have a love of learning is so important to me. That is why, as English leader, I feel privileged to be a part of our children’s journey.
