Year 1 Curriculum
So far this year we have covered a range of texts in English including Traditional Tales, The Storm Whale and Orion and the Dark. We have used these to begin to explore different styles of writing including: diary entries, non-chronological reports and poetry. We also incorporate reading skills into our English lessons such as predicting and asking and answering questions about our texts.
As Year 1 is an important year for Phonics due to the Phonics Check in the Summer Term, we teach this daily by following the Letters and Sounds Framework. We put a high focus on reading, encouraging parents to read with their child every night which will help to secure children’s understanding and comprehension. This will also be developed in school during daily Guided Reading sessions.
During the Autumn and Spring term we have been following the guidance of the ‘White Rose Hub’ in Maths covering topics such as place value, number bonds, addition and subtraction and the children have particularly enjoyed our recent measure topic.
Previous topics in Science have included ‘Living Things and Their Habitats’, where we enjoyed our visit to Chester Zoo, and ‘Investigating Materials’. We have looked at countries around the globe with our ‘Where in the World is Barnaby Bear?’ and have also looked at local history during ‘Why is Stoke-on-Trent So Special?’.
PE has also been a big focus in Year One as we have been refining our skills in throwing, catching, balance and agility. This will continue into the Summer Term as we begin to use these skills during some team games such as handball and rounders. Children will also be taking part in PE lessons which express the importance of exercise on our health.
During the Summer Term we will be continuing to work through the National Curriculum in both English and Maths, with a focus on spelling and 2, 5, and 10 Times Tables. Our overall Science title is ‘Are You Listening Carefully?’, where we will be investigating sound, focusing on how sound travels and the structure of the ear. Children will also be developing their geographical skills when we go ‘On Safari’ in our topic lessons, working with maps, climate reports and identifying human and physical features.
RE still continues to be a core subject in our curriculum, promoting the ethos of both the Catholic religion and our school. Children will be looking at Pentecost and the important work of Jesus in their units for the Summer Term.
Homework in Year 1 is sent out on a Friday and is collected in from children the following Wednesday. Pieces of homework are created to support our current learning and to develop children’s understanding.
