Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Class Teacher- Mrs Gravano

Support Staff- Mrs Coates

You are able to receive regular updates about events and other important information on Class Dojo. We will also upload photographs of our class during their time in Year 1, so that you can see what we are getting up to in class.

We have had a great start to the year so far, the highlight being our trip to Chester Zoo.  We would like to share some of the exciting things we have to come!

In English, we have had a big focus on letter formation and handwriting to improve our presentation. We have also looked at Traditional Tales – learning the stories using sequencing, story maps, story language and role play. We are now moving onto other forms of writing, such as poetry and non-fiction writing and how the use of adjectives can improve our writing.

Children are expected to read each night at home and have their diaries signed. The diaries get checked each day. In school, children will have daily guided reading sessions, where they focus on one book per week in detail and answer questions about the text. We also incorporate reading skills into our English lessons.  Every child will also be listened to whilst they read at least once a week.

As Year 1 is an important year for Phonics due to the Phonics Check in the Summer Term, we teach this daily following the Letters and Sounds Framework. Children will also be sent home spelling words to practise each week, which will often be words that do not follow the usual phonics rules and that the children just need to know.

In Maths, we will be covering Number, including: place value, addition, subtraction and multiplication.  We are also excited as we are introducing TT Rockstars to help improve our times tables and children have received their unique login. Can you become a Rock Hero?!

Homework will be given out on a Friday and must be completed and returned no later than Wednesday the following week please.  The children can choose a different activity from the list each week, ranging from art activities to practising their maths skills. Please sign the relevant part on the homework front sheet once each activity is completed.

In Science this term we are looking at Animals. We will be classifying animals, looking at the needs of animals, their habitats and food chains.

In Geography, we have looked at countries around the globe with our ‘Where in the World is Barnaby Bear?’ focus.  The children will also have the opportunity to bring Barnaby Bear home for the weekend and complete a diary to show Barnaby’s adventures.

In RE, we continue to promote the ethos of both the Catholic religion and our school. We have looked at creation and are now moving on to families and celebrations within the Catholic Faith.

In History, we will be looking at local history such as the pottery industry, Sir Stanley Matthews and Captain Smith.

In PE, we are covering Dance and Multi-Skills. In our Dance lessons, we will be using ‘Animals’ as a stimulus. In Multi-Skills, we will be practising throwing and catching, agility and co-ordination.

In Art we will be looking at creating pieces of work that include light and dark tones, as well as investigating more about colour.

A Curriculum letter will be sent home at the beginning of each new term, with more detailed information regarding exactly what the children will be doing at school that term.
