Homework

Homework at St Wilfrid’s Catholic Academy

At St Wilfrid’s, our approach to homework is rooted in our mission to nurture confident, independent learners who are supported by strong partnerships between school, home, and parish. Inspired by the words of Jesus, “Love one another, as I have loved you” (John 13:34), we believe that learning continues beyond the classroom and that homework plays a vital role in reinforcing and extending pupils’ understanding.

Why Homework Matters

Homework is carefully planned to:

  • Reinforce key skills in literacy and maths.
  • Encourage independent study habits.
  • Extend learning through reading and project work.
  • Prepare pupils for the expectations of high school.
  • Strengthen the home-school partnership.

Homework is timetabled and structured to ensure consistency and clarity for pupils, parents, and staff. Teachers monitor completion and provide feedback in a variety of ways, including peer review, teacher marking, and parent-child collaboration.

How Parents Can Support

Parents and carers are encouraged to:

  • Provide a quiet, suitable space for homework.
  • Show interest and value in their child’s homework.
  • Praise and encourage effort and completion.
  • Monitor progress and communicate with school if difficulties arise.
  • Sign reading diaries and support regular reading at home.

Homework Expectations

Homework varies by key stage and includes:

  • Daily reading
  • Weekly spelling, grammar, and times tables practice
  • Arithmetic and maths activities
  • Half-termly curriculum projects

Homework is adapted where necessary to support pupils with SEND, ensuring tasks are accessible and meaningful.

Supporting Success

We celebrate pupils who complete homework consistently and to a high standard. Where homework is missed or not completed satisfactorily, we follow a supportive process involving reminders, catch-up opportunities, and communication with parents.

Working Together

Homework is a key part of our Home-School Agreement. With your support, we aim to help every child develop the discipline, confidence, and skills needed to thrive in their learning journey.
