Music

Hello! My name is Mrs. Wallace, and I am the music teacher here at St. Wilfrid's Catholic Academy. My own love for music began during my school days, and I am passionate about sharing that love with our pupils. I firmly believe that every child at St. Wilfrid’s has the potential to become a musician. My goal is for every student to leave our school with a deep appreciation and love for music.

Intent

Music connects us and enables communication that overcomes barriers and is a constant throughout our lives. Music has the power to inspire, comfort, motivate, and provide a space for reflection. Through learning about a diverse range of music children are able to understand different cultures and the world around them, they are able to use music for personal development as a powerful means of expression.

Well considered and planned opportunities to create, play, perform and listen to music allow children to develop academic discipline, perseverance and their understanding of the importance of practice in order to improve their composition, performance and listening skills. Additionally, children develop an understanding of the role of music within society and throughout history.

At St Wilfrid’s Catholic Academy we aim to instil a lifelong musical skill in every child. Our high quality music education fosters a love for music, nurtures the talent our students have, boosts confidence, encourages creativity and develops a sense of accomplishment with achievements celebrated.

Implementation

Music lessons at St. Wilfrid’s are designed to inspire and engage all students, helping them develop both their musical talent and their love for music. Practical learning opportunities are a key component of nearly every lesson.

Our goal is for all children to develop their understanding and abilities in three key areas of music: technical, constructive, and expressive. Students build upon their prior knowledge and continue to develop their musicianship skills.

Our curriculum is aligned with the National Curriculum and ensures that all children:

- Perform, listen to, review, and evaluate music from various historical periods, genres, styles, and traditions, including the works of renowned composers and musicians.

- Learn to sing and use their voices, improvise, create, and compose music individually and collaboratively, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology effectively, and advance to higher levels of musical proficiency.

- Understand and explore how music is created, produced, and communicated, including through elements such as pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure, and appropriate musical notations.

Impact

Our children should appreciate how the joy of making music can enrich the school and wider community, nourishing each student and strengthening bonds of support and trust.

As a Catholic school, music is integral to our worship and the dissemination of the Gospel message. Our school environment is filled with music, supported by extensive instrumental instruction beyond the regular curriculum.

We recognise our children's musical progress when:

- They can relate the music they hear to their personal experiences and learning in other subjects.

- They are confident and enthusiastic about performing in front of their peers.

- They can organise sounds purposefully within a structure and communicate their ideas effectively.
